MICRO-IMPROVEMENTS, MEGA IMPACT

Formula for Change indicates Micro-Improvements.
Change is a topic of such perennial interest that umpteen change theories and change management models exist. One such model is the Beckhard-Harris change model that describes the conditions necessary for the desired change to occur. The model specifies that organisations and individuals change when,
  • There is DISSATISFACTION(D) with the current state, and,
  • There is a clear and shared VISION(V) of a preferred future, and,
  • There is an acceptable FIRST STEPS(F) to achieving the Vision, and
  • The product of DxVxF is greater than the existing RESISTANCE(R) to change among those whose support is required for successful implementation.
These conditions give rise to a change formula: D x V x F > R.

The famous Beckhard-Harris Change Equation (also known as the Formula for Change) aims to serve as a simplified way of analysing the potential success or failure of a change initiative within a system. In most cases, system leaders conceptualise programs because dissatisfaction and vision exist. But programs fail, because simple, clear first steps are missing. This is where a micro improvement approach fits and proves to be very effective. By design, it lays down clear first steps that users find doable and relevant to their context. Thus, one becomes more likely to overcome the resistance to change.

This is a four part series on Micro Improvements. Read the previous piece on how micro improvements is just another term for change and the following pieces on how micro improvements restore stakeholders’ agency and catalyse exponential social change.
